Would a Brit ever call his lover "sweetpea"???

Help, please!

Not in my experience. I think it's more something a dad would say to his daughter but I've never met anyone who uses it so it's hard to say.

I have been known to use 'sweetie pie' but usually only when I want something! ;-)

Damn, that's what I thought.
I read the nickname in a different context (although not too different, since it was used between a married couple) and wondered about it, since I've only ever seen it used in a father-daughter context before.

But it somehow got stuck in my head nonetheless...

Ah well, seems like I'll have to keep searching for the right term for Orlando to use :(

How about a different approach? Find an insult and use that as term of endearment?

I usually would (and have at some earlier point), but right where I am right now in the story I need something that hints at Orlando's feelings for Vig without him actually saying the words.
So I need something analogous to Vig's use of "love".

Hero? Superman? Prince Charming? Superstar? Tiger? Amigo? Captain?

No :(
Neither of those fits the mood of the scene, I fear.

But thanks for trying to help me, sweetie! *smooch*

If Orlando speaks another language then perhaps try that?

*hugs*

Yaeh, I thought about that too... now I'll just have to figure out which language I want him to be halfway fluent in (because I sure as hell won't go with the usual French *shudders* I SO dislike the sound of that language!)

Standard options in British Schools are French, Spanish and German nowadays.

(In the 70s it was compulsory French and optional German in my school.)

German is easily ruled out since the boys have a deal regarding Orlando learning the language.
Spanish might be an option, but I'd have to go back and change a small bit of the story if I want Orlando to know this particular language.

I'm currently contemplating Italian. In my story Orlando has a degree in English, and depending on how things are done in the UK, he might have to have basic knowledge of Latin (we have to demonstrate proficiency in what amounts to at least 4 years of Latin thought in school). And the jump from Latin to Italian is a very small one.

Latin was taught in school when I was there but it isn't now. This might help though.

Ah very cool! Thanks!

I have decided that Orlando attended Durham University, so I'll check if there's a connection with Latin somewhere in their courses.

Sounds like your research is as meticulous as mine!

I wish all authors were that careful!

I'm a research slut :D

I actually surprised the hell out of Himself today because he was looking for a dish he could be cooking for a friend who's coming over tomorrow, and who's a vegetarian. And I was like "gimme a second..." and forwarded him the link to a vegetarian curry recipe I have looked up while searching for a menu Sean could be cooking from leftovers found in Vig's pantry in the fic :D

If I'm doing it, I'm doing it right - and that goes even more for research :)
