Baking

I love baking! It's one of my most favorite past-times and helped me get through tough times.
Even in the middle of my worst depressions I could find some peace and solace while measuring and mixing, icing and decorating.

I have no idea why, but somehow baking speaks to me on a subconscious level. I love the feeling of kneading dough, I adore the precision of decorating cookies and cakes. And who couldn't love the smell of a cake or pastry baking?

I'm usually not a particularly patient person, but when dealing with decorations or measuring exact amounts of ingredients, I can gladly lose myself in minute details, no-one but me gives a damn about.

Below the cut I'll give you a glimpse into the things I've baked these last few months...



an army of Cookie Monsters invaded my kitchen ;) (not my best batch, but I've been told they were palatable)


birthday cake for my brother


fructose free cupcake with coffee-Kahlúa-topping ;) - a treat for me


"Vanillekipferl" - traditional Austrian Christmas cookies rolled in vanilla and sugar 


last minute birthday truffle cake for my dad -


"Eisenbahner" - yet another traditional Austrian Christmas cookie, losely translated to "train tracks" because of their looks, 2 layers of shortcrust pastry with raspberry filling, topped with marzipan "tracks" and a raspberry "trackbed"


peach-coconut cake called "Snowflake Cake" for Himself's birthday (yet again a last minute project)


choux pastry swans filled with cream - because I was bored and wanted to try a choux pastry-recipe



I usually can't eat what I create (thank you, fructose intolerance *pffffft*), but I like baking so much I don't really care about that little fact (and I can't get fat from what I can't eat ... so I selflessly help the people around me gain weight :D ).

And before you ask - I'm completly pants at cooking! There is NO relation between these two things at all! ;)

I can only speak for the coffee-cupcakes, but those were a hit, if I'm allowed to say so myself ;) (but a generous dash of alcohol can never be wrong, and might have clouded my judgement ;) )

If you ever find yourself in Vienna, there might just be a test-tasting on the menu for you ;)

Unfortunately, we've been to Vienna in recent years and unless we do a river cruise I don't think it's on the list for a revisit just yet.

Mind you, a river cruise is something we'd like to try...

:) I've heard the cruises down the Danube are quite a nice way of travelling ;)

I usually drive by the docked cruises a few times a week and the people on these ships seem to have quite a good time ;) Particularly in summer it seems to be a really nice way of spending a holiday!
