Feb. 25th, 2016 02:24 am24 - Sunrise & Sunset
I've always loved the moments when a day begins and ends.
Being a night-owl I think I can safely say that I've watched more sunrises than sunsets over the years. It's very easy to miss the moments when the sun leaves the sky - on a normal day we're usually busy with something else during this time of day. But sunsets are hard to miss - you notice the moment when the night leaves and the birds chirp their greeting to the coming day.
Over the last 10+ years I've taken pictures of more than a hundred sunsets and sunrises. I've had some of the most beautiful moments of my life during sunsets and sunrises - taking pictures of them are a way to remember these moments.
Under the cut I'll post a bunch of pics taken during the last 2+ years. They're not great and more often than not the colours don't do justice to the real beauty of them because they were all snapped with my phone.
2013

(A pic snapped while walking Himself's parents' dog. Right at this very moment they were on their way to Tenerife... We were battling temperatures of -15° to -20°Celsius while they were lazing in the sun!)

(Add the last rays of the sinking sun peeking out under the clouds to a typical autumn rain-shower and you get a beautiful rainbow - or two, if you look closely!)

(Not a real sunset this time, but the last light of the day on Christmas Eve.)

(The last rays of the setting sun colouring the bottom of the clouds on Christmas Day.)

(The last sunset of the year on New Year's Eve 2013)
2014

(I love the little pink cloud floating towards the sunset. I don't know why, but I've always been of the opinion that a cloud would taste like candyfloss if you would bite into one... and this pink cloud proves that theory, right? ;) )

(A sunrise this time. I love how the sky turns pink first just to burst into the most beautiful shades of orange a few moments later.)

(This beautiful sky surprised me one day when I left the supermarket. I dropped my bags right then and there and snapped this picture.)

(Another sunset - this time snapped from the other side of our "mountain" while driving on a bridge over the Danube. Don't worry, I've been the passenger ;) )

(The moments before the sun comes up over the mountain in June.)

(Another sunrise a few days later - this time I captured the first sunlight hitting the treetops.)

(A lovely candyfloss-cloudy sunrise in the middle of June. I stood outside and wondered where the plane might be heading. I love that you can still see the moon if you look closely. Day and night, together in one picture.)

(The first pic is the early morning-light on our second-to-last morning in Italy. The other one is the sunset the night before the end of our holiday.)

(The sunrise on the last morning of our holiday. I've been up packing for an hour already and took a break to admire the view.)

(Another sunset. This time snapped from on top of our "mountain". One of the most touristy spots you can find in/around Vienna, but so beautiful it's really worth braving the masses ;) )

(Another sunset snapped from another bridge across the Danube. It looked beautiful and scary -as if the world ahead was on fire- at the same time.)

(The kind of sunset I love the most - pink, pinker, the pinkest! Stunning colours lighting up the whole sky.)
2015

(This sunset is a lot less pink and has a lot more clear blue sky... but it's just as stunning!)

(Winter-holiday last year. The early morning sun hitting the mountain in the distance.)

(The same morning, just the opposite direction.)

(Another morning. The sun lighting up the mountain top. We could see this mountain from our bed - imagine how beautiful it looked when the light of the full moon reflected on the snow! Somehow this mountain always reminded me of the Caradhras!)

(Another morning. I love how the sun rises out of the dark clouds that brought us some snow during the night.)

(And a sunset this time. It's still the same day and the clouds still threaten a few inches of new snow.)

(The last light hits the far side of our very own "Caradhras".)

(Back home again. The sun hitting the top of our "mountains" before finally disappearing for the night.)

(Another one of those very pink sunsets I love the most.)

(I love how the trees are just silhouettes in front of the setting sun. Caught while waiting for Himself to pick me up in November.)

(The up-side of getting up at an ungodly hour in order to go to uni? Catching a lovely foggy sunrise I'd have slept through on any other day.)

(A brightly coloured sunset. I love how the sky gradually changes from dark blue to nearly white.)

(A week later, another sunrise I just caught because of a lecture. This time the blindingly white kind of sunrise.)
2016

(And finally: the picture that inspired today's post. The sunset I saw right after getting up from my afternoon nap today ;) )

Date: 2016-02-26 01:32 am (UTC)I wish I had a "real" camera with me then... I suspect it would have looked so much more amazing taken with a SLR and some proper settings.
Love your icon!!!!! So much!

This icon is also Terragen created. I used to have a lot of photos uploaded on my personal website back in 2000. I don't know if I have them any more = must check!
I checked - there is still a free non-commercial version available but browsing their website was an eyeopener! Terragen was used in so many films I've seen and I never knew!
